Different therapists have different areas of expertise. You want to know if they’ve actually worked with issues similar to yours and how they approach it. You don’t need them to have lived your exact life, but experience and training in specific areas can help therapists provide you with the proper support for your needs. 

What does the first session usually look like?

This helps set expectations and reduce anxiety. Also, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the expectations for the first session so that you can prepare and plan accordingly. For example, some therapists will ask that you complete intake paperwork before the appointment.

How do you decide on a treatment plan or approach?

It is important to understand that therapy is a collaborative effort. Your therapist should want to hear your goals and help create a plan that feels right for you. Whether they use CBT, EMDR, Brainspotting, or a more eclectic approach, the key is that your therapist is willing to adjust based on what works for you.

Have you worked with people from my background, identity, or culture before?

San Diego is beautifully diverse. If aspects of your identity (race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc.) are important to you in therapy, it’s okay to ask how the therapist holds space for that. Many clients find it empowering to work with someone who is affirming and culturally competent.

What is your policy around cancellations, emergencies, or outside-of-session contact?

This one is more practical but still very important. Life happens. You want to know what to expect if you need to reschedule, or if something comes up and you need support between sessions.

How do you measure progress in therapy?

This question can open up a meaningful conversation about how you’ll both know therapy is working and when it might be time to shift or even wrap up.
